If you like a beautiful red color in your salads and enjoy onions, these are great. For those who don't care for onions, it's likely because they don't like biting into chunks. If you don't cook with onions, you're missing out on the flavor they add to food. I recommend grating the onion instead — nobody will even know it's in there, but your food will taste so much better.

Never disappointed in buying this whole red onion. Great for adding to guacamole, salad or any food item. I have found that the look a like onion keeper really does have some staying power over wrapping the onion in aluminum foil. 
Also, freezes quite well!

It's an Onion!

I love raw, red onions, especially in salads.  To pick out onions, choose bulbs that are completely firm, heavy for their size, and have dry, papery, and shiny skin. Avoid onions with soft spots, green sprouts, or a strong odor, as these are signs of spoilage.

Tips for picking a good onion

Back in the Boomer days, we had these on grocery store shelves using different marketing:  they called them Bermuda Onions, as these onion varieties grew in Bermuda, and other islands in the Caribbean.  Nice, strong flavor without the strong smell that comes from yellow onions.  Take note:  Yellow onions have their place, as their strong flavor is great to cook sauces with - but when these red onions are used, it adds color to any salad with great taste.

Red Onions - Pretty To Look At, Good To Eat

BOW DOWN you pathetic little earthlings! The planet of the purple people eaters have found out you are eating their breed eggs! You slice them, you dice them and cook them until they can scream no more. The great purple mother ship will appear and remove all purple seed pods from the terrible vegan earthlings and leave onion powder as earths only spice! Soylent green for earthlings......

Walmart recently reached out via email to ask for my "honest feedback" on my recent purchase of One (1) Whole Red Onion. Far be it from me to deny the corporate algorithms the hard-hitting investigative journalism they crave.
Here is my exhaustive, unbiased review of this aggressive purple sphere.

Unboxing %26 Aesthetics
Upon extraction from the plastic grocery bag, the first thing that strikes you is the sheer, unbridled structural integrity. It is incredibly round. It boasts a stunning, bruised-magenta color palette that screams "I have high antioxidant levels, but I will make you suffer."
The outer papery skin provides an ASMR-quality crunch upon handling, though it does have a tendency to shed microscopic flecks all over the counter like a botanical case of dandruff.

Performance %26 User Experience
The user interface is incredibly intuitive, though the setup process is brutal.

* The Peel: Initial setup requires removing the dry outer chassis. This went smoothly, though the onion offered zero instructions or troubleshooting tips.

* The Slice: As soon as I breached the inner core, the onion deployed its primary defense mechanism: chemical warfare. It began emitting a localized cloud of syn-propanethial-S-oxide (the stuff that makes you cry). I haven't wept like that since the first ten minutes of the movie Up. If you are looking for an ingredient that forces you to confront your deepest emotional traumas while prepping a salad, this is the SKU for you.

* Flavor Profile: Pungent. Aggressive. Spicy in a way that regular white onions can only dream of. It completely dominated the burger it was placed upon, asserting its dominance over the cheddar, the beef, and my dignity.

Battery Life %26 Longevity
Excellent standby time. It sat in my crisper drawer for four days doing absolutely nothing, showing no signs of degradation or firmware updates. However, the post-consumption battery life is where it really lingers. I ate this onion at 1:00 PM, and despite brushing my teeth twice, chewing three sticks of gum, and drinking a cup of coffee, my breath still smells like a medieval onion patch at 8:00 PM.

Final Verdict
For $0.78, Walmart has delivered a solid, multi-layered product that delivers exactly what it promises on the box (if it came in a box). It cuts well, it tastes loud, and it makes you cry.
Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes. Would I recommend it to an enemy? Even more so.
Pros: Great color, excellent crunch, forces emotional vulnerability. Cons: Zero bluetooth connectivity, caused a minor marital dispute regarding my breath.

A Masterclass in Layered Complexity (Literally)

Nice flavor and usually last a decent amount of time but they do need to be used within a week or so. On occasion when I peel back the outer layer they are drying out inside. You can peel back the layers to use the rest of the onion still of course. I also find they don't last as long covered in the fridge when partially used like white or yellow onions.

Red onions are a staple in my kitchen, and these are one of my favorite varieties to buy. They have a great flavor that is strong enough to add a little bite to meals without completely overpowering everything else. I especially enjoy using them on burgers, sandwiches, tacos, and fresh salads.

The onions I've purchased have consistently been fresh, firm, and good quality. They hold up well in the refrigerator and last quite a while before needing to be used. Whether I'm slicing them thin for a salad or dicing them up for a recipe, they always add great color and flavor.

For the price, these are an easy item to keep on hand. They make simple meals taste even better and are a versatile ingredient that works in so many dishes. If you enjoy the flavor of red onions, these are a great choice and one I purchase regularly.

Perfect for Burgers %26 Salads

If the red onion I received looked like the one in this photo, I would be very happy, but unfortunately, it does not. The onion I received is definitely old, and it is hard to see in the photos, but it is full of soft spots. I  expect that I will have to throw it out before I can use it. Walmart's produce department seems to be going downhill fast!

I don't know about the produce in your area but mine is constantly substandard. I can never trust that I will get quality fruits or veggies. My red onion today was disgusting - I didn't touch it with my bare hand. It was squishy, y'all. I mean... I'm sure most areas are different so I am happy for you if y'all have great produce. I am just so sick and tired of years of terrible produce here that I decided to start posting reviews to see if I can draw attention to the problem. (FYI: Triad region of NC)
