PS3 consoles are home gaming systems developed by Sony, officially known as PlayStation 3, released in 2006 as part of the PlayStation family. They are designed for playing Blu-ray disc games, digital downloads, and multimedia content, including movies, music, and photos. PS3 consoles come in several models—Original (Fat), Slim, and Super Slim—each differing in size, weight, storage capacity, and design. They feature built-in Wi-Fi, support HD output up to 1080p, and allow online gaming through PlayStation Network (PSN). Controllers include Sixaxis and DualShock 3, offering wireless play, vibration, and motion-sensing features for an interactive gaming experience.

Not all PS3 consoles have built-in Wi-Fi. The Original “Fat” models released in 2006 had mixed configurations: some versions included Wi-Fi, while others required a wired Ethernet connection for network access. Starting with the PS3 Slim in 2009, all consoles featured built-in Wi-Fi, making wireless internet access standard. The PS3 Super Slim, released in 2012, also included built-in Wi-Fi as a standard feature. Wi-Fi allowed users to connect to PlayStation Network for online gaming, digital downloads, and streaming services without a wired connection. Therefore, only later models reliably included built-in wireless capability.

Sony released three main PlayStation 3 console models over the system’s lifecycle, each with distinct design and features. The Original or “Fat” model launched in 2006, offering backward compatibility with some PS2 games, multiple storage options, and a larger, heavier chassis. The PS3 Slim, introduced in 2009, featured a smaller, lighter design, lower power consumption, and removed most PS2 backward compatibility while maintaining full PS1 support. The PS3 Super Slim, released in 2012, further reduced size and weight, introduced a sliding disc cover, and offered smaller hard drive options. Each model targeted different price points and user preferences.
